ALICE KARVELLI

OUT OF THE BOX

Out of the Box is a performance work about the liberation of the self, in defiance of barriers to expansion. The box is a constructed internal/mental space; it is necessary to break free to redefine oneself and grow beyond limitations. Alice Karveli is an interdisciplinary mixed media artist with a focus in performance, both live and on film. She uses performance, as a medium for exploration, emotional unleashing, healing, transformation, and withstanding inner strife. Her most recent work was featured at Little Wolf Parade’s SLAP event in Nottingham and at the Art Room Fairs in Rome, Italy.

KELVIN ATMADIBRATA 

Forcing Hyacinth

One foot partially submerged in cold water, his other foot on the ground, struggling to keep his fulcrum upright. In his hand a familiar plastic milk bottle, filled with bubble liquid. Slowly he blows into a straw, hyacinth-shaped bubbles sprouting from his mouth. Forcing Hyacinth silently weaves a narrative that hints at the Greek mythology of the hyacinth flower and the botany process of forcing bulbs to flower; a commentary on the pressure, self-inflicted or otherwise, of growing up. Kelvin (b.1988, Jakarta, Indonesia) channels super-heroes and anti-heroes awakened by puberty, and adolescent fantasy to confront masculine stereotypes in Southeast Asia.

SYLVAIN SOUKLAYE

Data Sampling/Ghost

Data Sampling/Ghost Suffering tracks, archives and re-enacts almost 40 years of bodily memories from parents without roots to a son without frontiers. Born in Lyon, France, Sylvain Souklaye is a live performer, sound and video artist based in Copenhagen. His performances are a collage of individual memories which are re-enacted for and via the audience. He is interested in sampling intimacies about people who don’t belong to a determinate identity, gender, class, colour or nationality. Sylvain’s most recent work has presented in New York, Germany, Finland and Brazil.

AL

Spilled

In this short piece, the performer will interact with objects (oranges) in a series of small actions. There will be no spoken or written text. AL’s work with performance finds form in the minimal aesthetics of micro-performances. Specific materials and gestures generate poetic movements, or tableaux vivants, open to each witness/participant’s desire and interpretation. AL is an artist and researcher working and living in Liverpool.

TEATRO POMODORO

Sirens, Men & Crabs

In thi“Welcome to a world where the Sirens are the unsung heroines, Ulysses will never be the hero he wants to be and Giant Crabs are taking over.” Sirens, Men and Crabs is a surreal blend of clown and dark comedy that will turn Ancient Greece upside down. Teatro Pomodoro is an award winning international ensemble of performers and creators based in Liverpool that specialise in an electrifying blend of clowning, bouffon, music, comedy and dance.

CHARLOTTE BLACKBURN

A Proppa Lady

A Proppa Lady explores the treatment that women may experience on a night out. “Last year I was in a club, dancing the night away, when a man out of the blue put his hand up my dress and grabbed my bum. When I told him that his behaviour wasn’t ok, he replied: ‘Calm down love, it’s only banter – take it as a compliment. Charlotte’s practice explores her life and her experiences through interactive storytelling. She uses unconventional sources that others may avoid as material to test the empathy of the audience. Her most recent work has been presented at the Edinburgh Fringe and the UnShut Festival in Sheffield.

MATT ALLEN

No Air

“Sit. Take a moment. Breathe. In for three. Hold for two. Out for four.  What do you want to know? What should I share with you? Look me in the eyes. Put on the headphones. Welcome to my world.”  NoAir is an interactive one to one, sit down table performance exploring anxiety. Matt Allen is a co-director of CLAY, Centre for Live Art in Yorkshire, he has been making performance since 2005.  Matt’s work explores anxiety and depression and uses new and open source technologies to create audience led experiences. His most recent work has been presented at York Mediale, Compass Festival of Live Art in Leeds, Unshut Festival in Sheffield and Summit in Manchester.

OLIVER TENNANT

The Ballad of Me and My Brain

The Ballad of Me and My Brain explores Oliver Tennant’s struggle and battle to overcome and understand OCD in playful and meaningful ways. Oliver uses tasks, repetition, games, shampoo, Hollywood blockbusters and distortion to present what he describes as an ode to mental instability. Oliver is a Liverpool based performer that has recently completed an MA in Contemporary Performance Practice at the University of Salford.

WILLIAM LANG

Lately

Lately is a solo work exploring notions of loneliness, through costume play, dance improvisation and spoken word. William Lang is a dancer, performance maker and visual artist based in Liverpool. His work explores feelings, everyday heartbreak and human emotion. William studied at Goldsmiths University and most recently presented work at Kazimir Stockroom, Liverpool with his performance collective Matting.

CONNOR COXX

Orig(anal) Sin

Orig(anal) Sin is a fabulous drag cabaret which critiques the infamous Westboro Baptist Church’s protest methods and belief’s. Connor attempt’s to unite christianity and the queer community, two communities he is a part of, by mimicking the church’s use of colourful homophobic signs and by delivering a parody of songs as lip syncs, sing alongs, and monologues. Orig(anal) Sin also explores notions of complicity, allowing the audience to join in this hate speech, as the church does to its younger members as soon as they are born. Connor is a recent BA (Hons) Theatre graduate from Chichester University. Since graduating he has presented Orig(anal) Sin at the Brighton Fringe.
